The Touring Outlaw Modified Series (TOMS) was back in action June 20, at Abilene Speedway in Abilene, Texas.

While the car count was lower at 17 total modifieds, the action on the track was non-stop as Mineral Wells, Texas native Chad Melton parked his No. 71 modified in victory lane for his first career win with the series.

“I’m speechless man. It’s hard for me not to get emotional. I’ve been wanting to win one of these (TOMS feature) forever and these guys are so fast,” Melton said in victory lane. “I just want to say if there’s anyone out there and they have doubts, you keep going boy. Keep digging.”

The 25-lap feature race had five cautions with the first one coming three laps in as the 17A car of Aaron Alley (Lakeside City, Texas) made contact with the back stretch wall and came to a stop on the track.

Three laps later, Mark Patterson (Merkel, Texas) brought out the second caution of the race as he came to a stop in turn two.

Jason Sartain (Royce City, Texas) took the lead briefly from Melton with 10 laps to go, however, Melton regained the lead on the next lap.

With eight laps remaining the 14v car of Clayton Thompson (Fort Worth, Texas) went for a spin in turn four and brought out the caution. Sartain would spin one lap later in the same corner for the race’s final caution.

Matthew Day (Farmersville, Texas) finished in a close second behind Melton, while Jason Ingalls (Longview, Texas) was third. Troy Taylor (Midlothian, Texas) and Josh McGaha (Abilene, Texas) rounded out the top five finishers.

Sartain had the fastest lap of the race on lap 12 with a lap time of 16.003 seconds, according to My Race Pass timing.

Chase Hatton (De Berry, Texas) and Day were the hard chargers of the race with both drivers moving up seven spots. Hatton started 13^th and moved up to sixth, while Day started in ninth and moved up to second, respectively.

Earlier in the night, Fred Wojtek (Blackwell, Texas) and Sartain were the winners of the two heat races.

TOMS set for double-header this weekend

The series turns its attention to Hunt County Raceway this evening, June 26, as they will take part in the Charlie Brown Classic.

The drivers will be competing for a top prize of $2,072 to win and $272 to start. There will also be a dash paying $540 to win and $54 to start.

Races start at 8 p.m. and as always, if you can’t make it out to the track, be sure to catch all the action on Race On.

The TOMS will also be in action on Saturday, June 27, at Rocket Raceway Park to complete the weekend double-header.

Saturday’s race will feature a $1,500 top prize and $240 to start. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps starting at 6:30 p.m. and racing starting at 7 p.m.

General admission will be $25 and $20 for seniors 62 and older or those with a military ID. Kids 6-12 are $10 and kids 5 and under are free. Pit gate cost will be $40. Five and under are free.

Joining the TOMS Saturday will be factory stocks, stock cars, limited/ B-Mods, Jr. limited mods and eco mods.
